An Open Letter to Readers:
It
is a privilege to have the opportunity to express ourselves through
art. The desire to create is the one thing that we all share. It
links us as kindred spirits to the great brotherhood and sisterhood
of artists past, present, and future.
Plein
air painting is the most natural way to learn how to paint while
retaining one's innate individuality. The greatest challenge that
we face is not in manipulating paint, but rather in learning how
to see as an artist. Your painting is like a document stating how
well you see and understand the world around you.
Painting
from life is the moment of truth. If you can paint light, then you
can paint everything under the sun. My book PLEIN AIR PAINTING IN
WATERCOLOR AND OIL is designed to help smooth the way. It's really
not impossible. And besides, the fun every step of the way more
than makes up for any temporary set-backs. Painting from life is
the great teacher. It puts you on the road where everything is within
your grasp, where all lessons can be learned by the student who
is both patient and determined. In plein air painting, you embark
on the royal road of creativity. Join me on this wonderful ride.
